Supported to succeed: My ECT mentoring journey
My mentor journey
This academic year, I embarked on a new journey as an ECT mentor, supporting two early career teachers. To my surprise, finding my feet in this role has been far more manageable than I anticipated. Initially, the prospect of guiding two new teachers through the Early Career Framework felt overwhelming. I had heard about the demanding responsibilities: weekly meetings, staying informed about the latest research, offering in-the-moment support – all while balancing my own workload. Although this role certainly requires dedication, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I am immensely grateful for the support I have received from the NIoT.
Streamlined communications
One of the things I appreciate most about the NIoT is how they prioritise communication with their mentors. Each week, I receive a bulletin that succinctly outlines what ECTs have been focusing on in their training. This insight is invaluable as it enables me to tailor my mentoring sessions and focus my observations accordingly. Furthermore, the weekly bulletin includes a handy list of key dates and deadlines. This streamlined approach to communication has ensured that I am always on track and well-informed. This has allowed me to focus on what matters most - supporting my ECTs effectively.
Mentor wellbeing
NIoT recognises the importance of mentor wellbeing as a factor of succeeding in this role. Their online platform simplifies so many tasks, making it easy to schedule meetings and access pre-filled agendas which have enabled me to effectively plan support for my meetings and tailor the sessions to my ECTs' needs. There's even a dedicated space to track my ECTs' progress with their self-study, which has allowed me to identify areas where they might need extra support. These tools have empowered me to step into my new role with confidence and ease.
Mentor development
NIoT values my professional development as a mentor. Their in-depth yet clear and accessible training programme has provided me with a stable foundation in effective mentoring practices. This has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to guide my ECTs effectively. Beyond the online modules and resources, I've also had the opportunity to connect with other mentors face-to-face. These sessions have been great for sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and looking at how research can be applied to our local context.
The ECF programme plays such a crucial role in developing new teachers and the support system that the NIoT puts in place for its mentors is essential to its success. By heavily investing in their mentors, NIoT is creating a sustainable model for mentorship in education and I am pleased to be a part of it!
