Our Founding Trusts

Rooted in schools; improving outcomes

The National Institute of Teaching is run by the School-Led Development Trust, which was founded by four of England’s leading school trusts: The Harris Federation, Oasis Community Learning, Outwood Grange Academies Trust and Star Academies. Together, they are committed to transforming teacher development and the impact it has on school improvement.  Each of the four founding trusts will anchor an NIoT region and their CEOs sit on our board of directors.

The Harris Federation

The Harris Federation is an education charity led and run by teachers. There are now 52 Harris primary and secondary academies in London and Essex, as well as two teaching school hubs which train thousands of teachers every year.  Over the past thirty years, we have implemented ideas and initiatives that have transformed the opportunities of pupils from working class and disadvantaged backgrounds.  Harris academies are widely recognised as a force for social mobility.  We are immensely proud of the role that our alumni are now beginning to play in the world and of what we believe our current generation of pupils will go on to achieve.

-Sir Dan Moynihan, CEO of the Harris Federation and Chair of the NIoT's board of directors

Oasis Community Learning

Oasis Community Learning was established as a Multi-Academy Trust in 2004 with the vision to create “Exceptional Education at the Heart of the Community”. We now run 52 academies in five main regions throughout the UK, providing either primary, secondary or all-through education.  Across the country, Oasis has 4,400 staff members in roles inside and outside the classroom, who work together to develop the competence and character of young people to ensure that they each can reach their full potential, whatever their background, ability, or circumstances.

-John Barneby, CEO of Oasis Community Learning and director of the NIoT

Outwood Grange Academies Trust

Outwood Grange Academies Trust is an education charity and not-for-profit sponsor of primary, junior and secondary academies. We are a dynamic organisation, recognised nationally as one of the highest performing families of schools in the North of England.  We are now comprised of over 40 schools who work together to ensure that all children, irrespective of their starting point, receive an excellent education. We pride ourselves on meeting the needs of children in our care, including those who are most vulnerable or who face the greatest challenges.

-Lee Wilson, Interim CEO of Outwood Grange Academies Trust

Star Academies

Star Academies runs a growing network of primary and secondary schools, with clusters in Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands and East London.  All our efforts are geared towards raising the aspirations of children and young people in areas of social and economic deprivation to improve their life chances and help them succeed at the highest levels of education, employment and the professions. In every school, the entire staff team – working in partnership with parents and the local community – is committed to nurturing today’s young people and inspiring tomorrow’s leaders.

-Sir Mufti Hamid Patel, CEO of Star Academies and Deputy-Chair of the NIoT board of directors
