Develop myself
The best teachers never stop learning
Overview
The work that teachers do has the potential to change children’s lives. Of all the factors that influence pupil outcomes, the most influential within our control is the quality of the teacher in their classroom. That is why professional development is so critical, and why teachers need to continue to invest in our learning throughout our careers: not only for the young people in our classrooms right now, but for all the young people who will come after them.
Professional development is a long-term investment that reaps rewards. Not only will children learn more and enjoy their education, we've seen that teachers who invest in their development will use their additional knowledge and skills to enjoy their work more, and have greater opportunities for growth and progression in the profession.
The National Institute of Teaching’s suite of NPQs are built on leading research, and grounded in best practice: what we have learned works well in schools. Our programmes are developed by people who know what teachers need: designed with school life in mind, they are respectful of your precious time. We also work to develop our own research to ensure our programmes will have maximum impact.
What are NPQs?
Great school leaders ensure young people have the best possible experience and outcomes at school. It is a complex and challenging domain, and our NPQs are designed to support leaders and aspiring leaders to meet those challenges. We offer four leadership NPQs: in senior leadership, headship, executive leadership and Early Years, as well as four NPQs for teachers and leaders who wish to develop their expertise in specialist areas: literacy, behaviour and culture, leading teaching and leading teacher development. Our programmes have been developed in collaboration with schools and are built on leading research, while remaining grounded in best practice. Our hope is that our NPQ graduates will go on to work together long after their course ends to develop and transform both their own local provision, and the wider educational landscape.

Why study with the NIoT?
Our programmes are school-led: they are delivered by individuals who work in schools, right now. That means they have the in-depth, domain-specific knowledge to help you grapple with content at the right level, and to support you to problem-solve and apply learning to your own context.
Our programmes are centred on impact: our aim is for your practice to improve and develop in your current context, and for you to be ready and to take the next step in your career as a result of learning with us. We have designed our programmes carefully, and work closely with school leaders through our regional structures, as well as working with participants, to ensure our programmes are impactful in your context.
Our programmes are respectful of your time: we know you spend most of your time doing the most important job there is – serving the children in your community. That’s why our programmes are designed to be flexible, to deliver exactly what you need in the most time-efficient manner possible, and to have impact.
Our programmes are rooted in research: every aspect of what you learn is based on the best available research as well as what we have seen and experienced to work best in our founding multi-academy trusts and associate colleges.
Our programmes allow you to build a community: our in-person local seminars are focused on peer learning and problem solving together. As well as applying your learning to your own context, you will have the opportunity to build your network and support one another’s development beyond your time learning with the NIoT.
