Why specialist professional development for reception teachers matters

We discuss our new Excellence in Reception Teaching programme and why specialist professional development is so important for reception teachers.

For reception children, it is the year where so much begins. It’s the stage where children take their first steps into school life, building the knowledge, language, behaviours and relationships that will support them for years to come. These early experiences shape how children see themselves as learners, influencing their confidence, wellbeing and readiness to learn. That’s why high-quality teaching in reception matters.

As schools respond to increasingly diverse needs and rising expectations around school readiness, reception teachers are navigating an increasingly complex and important role. They need access to professional development that reflects this reality and supports the specialist nature of their work.

Yet until recently, there have been relatively few opportunities designed specifically with Reception teachers in mind. The new Excellence in Reception Teaching programme aims to change that.

The Department for Education has developed the Excellence in Reception Teaching programme as part of its wider commitment to improving outcomes for young children through high-quality professional development.

Designed for both new and more experienced reception teachers, the programme focuses on the knowledge and skills that make the greatest difference in the early years classroom. It also reflects a broader ambition to strengthen professional development across the workforce, so that every child can get the best possible start to school.

Reception teachers hold a uniquely important role in schools. They help children make the transition into formal education, while creating environments that encourage exploration, communication, independence and a love of learning. At the same time, they balance curriculum expectations with a deep understanding of child development and work closely with families to support each child’s progress.

It is often in reception that teachers spot emerging needs, build strong relationships with parents and carers, and establish the routines that help children feel secure and ready to learn.

These responsibilities require specialist expertise. When professional development is tailored to the reception context, it can help teachers strengthen their practice and feel more confident in responding to both the challenges and opportunities of early education.

The Excellence in Reception Teaching Programme focuses on four key areas of practice.

  1. Understanding child development

A strong understanding of child development helps teachers make informed decisions about learning, provision and support. By deepening their knowledge of how children learn and develop, reception teachers can create environments where every child has the opportunity to flourish.

2. Developing classroom practice

The programme explores practical, evidence-informed approaches that can be applied directly in the classroom. Teachers will consider how to create purposeful learning experiences, support children’s development, and build strong foundations for future learning.

3. Creating inclusive environments

Every reception classroom is different, shaped by the strengths, experiences and needs of the children within it. The programme supports teachers to develop approaches that help all children participate, succeed and feel a sense of belonging, including those with SEND and those who may need additional support.

4. Working in partnership with families

Families play a vital role in children’s learning and development. The programme explores how strong, positive relationships with parents and carers can support children’s transition into school and contribute to progress throughout the reception year.

We know that professional development needs to fit alongside the realities of school life. That’s why the Excellence in Reception Teaching programme combines flexible self-study with facilitated learning, allowing teachers to engage in high-quality development while continuing with their day-to-day teaching.

The focus is firmly on practical application. Participants will explore evidence-informed approaches and consider how these can be adapted meaningfully within their own setting.

For schools, investing in reception teaching is ultimately an investment in children’s long-term success. Strong practice in reception helps children develop the communication, language, literacy and social skills that underpin later learning. It supports positive attitudes to school and helps create the conditions for children to thrive.

By supporting reception teachers to deepen their expertise, schools can strengthen provision and improve outcomes from the very start of a child’s education.
