Get extra funding for NPQs
The revitalised National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) have opened up professional development and training to teachers and leaders around the country.
Funding will be available from the autumn term 2023 to incentivise participation in national professional qualifications (NPQs).
Tens of thousands of teachers so far have enrolled in one of the new programmes – which are free for all teachers working in state-funded schools and colleges.
The National Institute of Teaching offers the full range of NPQs. Our programmes have been specifically designed by teachers and leaders who understand the joys and pressures of school life. We provide essential training and guidance for school leaders – and would-be school leaders – at all levels, whether you aspire to lead on literacy or behaviour or are already the executive leader of an academy trust.
Who is eligible?
For each teacher or leader a state-funded school and state-funded 16 to 19 organisation employs and who starts a NPQ in the 2023 to 2024 academic year, the following funding grant will apply:
- state-funded primary schools with 1 to 150 pupils will receive a grant payment of £800
- state-funded primary schools with more than 150 pupils will receive a grant payment of £200
- state-funded secondary schools and state-funded 16 to 19 educational settings with 1 to 600 pupils will receive a grant payment of £200.
What can the funding be spent on?
Where and how the funding is deployed is entirely up to each school or 16-19 organisation. A school may decide to put it towards hiring a supply teacher, covering travel expenses or investing in technology that will help the teacher to engage with the NPQ.
Schools should keep a record of how the grant money is spent, though the form this takes is up to the individual school – it could, for example, be evidence of classroom cover or a copy of the NPQ participant’s timetable.
How do we access the funding?
Teaching involves more than enough paperwork as it is. The good news is that the small schools grant will not create any more.
There is no need to apply for this funding: it will be paid automatically, as part of normal payments from the Education and Skills Funding Agency.
When will the payment be made?
Payments will always be made in the summer term, so schools whose teachers begin an NPQ in October 2023 or February 2024 will receive the funding in summer term 2024.
What does this mean in practice?
Staff retention matters in all schools, in particular small schools. And the more training opportunities that teachers pursue, the stronger the school will be overall.
