New Board Directors for the National Institute of Teaching
The School-Led Development Trust – the organisation set up by four of England’s most respected school trusts to run the new National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) – has appointed three new directors, concluding recruitment to its Board of Directors. Opened in September 2022, the NIoT is dedicated to boosting the quality of teaching and school leadership by carrying out research, applying the insights to its professional development programmes, and sharing findings with the sector.
The three new Board appointments are:
Carole Willis, who has been Chief Executive of the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) since December 2013. Before joining NFER, she was Director of Research and Analysis at the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department’s Chief Scientific Adviser. She also worked as an Economic Consultant at National Economic Research Associates (NERA).
Professor Iram Siraj, who is Professor of Child Development and Education at the University of Oxford. Iram, a former teacher, previously held positions at the University of Warwick, University College London and the University of Wollongong. Iram has an international reputation for her longitudinal research and policy expertise. She was a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group for the Welsh Government (2006-2016) and has been a specialist advisor to the House of Commons Select Committee.
Dame Colette Bowe, who has worked as an executive and a non-executive director at the most senior levels in the City, in regulation and in Whitehall, is an External Member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee and a Trustee of the IFRS Foundation. She was Chairman of the UK Banking Standards Board from 2014 to 2019 and Ofcom from 2009 to 2014. She has previously chaired the Council of Queen Mary, University of London, and the music education body ABRSM. She is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Qatar Centre for Global Banking and Finance at King’s College London. More recently, she has also completed a period as a governor of the City of London Academy in Highbury Grove.
Commenting on the new appointments, Sir Dan Moynihan, Chair of the School-Led Development Trust’s Board of Directors, said: “I’m delighted to welcome three new directors to our Board, all highly respected and experienced in their respective fields.
“Carole Willis and Professor Iram Siraj’s expertise in research and policy reflects our ambitious research agenda, which will be led by teachers and leaders to benefit the education sector as a whole. Similarly, Dame Colette Bowe will help ensure our commitment to best-practice financial governance, which is particularly important given our aspiration to achieve university status.
“The Board of Directors is now complete and is looking forward to steering the NIoT towards our vision of helping to create a school system that nurtures the talents of teachers and leaders at all stages of their careers, so they can provide children with the world-class education they deserve.”
