New national teacher training partnership for career changers: National Institute of Teaching and Now Teach

The National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) is pleased to announce a brand-new partnership to help people get into teaching.

We are working with Now Teach, a national charity supporting career changers in teaching.

Now Teach is the only organisation in the UK dedicated to career changers in teaching.

They work alongside training providers and schools to offer a two-year bespoke programme to help the transition into the teaching profession and ongoing peer support from their network.

Now Teach have come on board with us as a Founding Partner. Our Founding Partners are organisations whose skills and expertise complement the Institute’s core teacher development and research capabilities, and include organisations like Microsoft, ResearchEd and TeacherTapp.

As Founding Partners, Now Teach will be able to work with the NIoT to support career changers to retrain as secondary teachers.

Career changers can bring invaluable expertise

Emma Rennison, Executive Director of Partnerships at the National Institute of Teaching, said: “I am excited to welcome Now Teach as a Founding Partner of the NIoT.

“There are few more fulfilling roles than teaching, and we know that there are many people who want to change careers, to be the person they always wanted to be. There is an urgent need to recruit new teachers into the classroom, but changing careers isn’t easy. Working with Now Teach gives our trainees access to a professional network of people in a similar position, with advice and support to guide them through their training and their first few months on the job.

“We are rooted in schools. We know the day-to-day challenges that teachers face - how unpredictable classroom life can be. Because we were set up by schools, we also know what senior leaders are looking for in a new teacher – information that will be invaluable when it comes to helping you secure a job. Career changers can bring invaluable expertise that schools really value, so it’s great to work with Now Teach on this project.”

Trainees can call on a network of peers for advice

Deborah Mills, CEO of Now Teach, said:

“Teaching is such an enjoyable and fulfilling career. At Now Teach our mission is to persuade people who are considering career change to join the teaching profession and share the skills they've acquired with young people in schools.

"We give them all the support they need to qualify and succeed as teachers. Trainees who join our network have hundreds of other career-changing peers to call on for advice, which all helps to keep them in the profession.

"We’re looking forward to working with NIoT to help get excellent candidates into teaching. We are particularly excited about NIoT’s part-time training offer, which is very attractive for people seeking to retrain to teaching.”

The NIoT’s part-time offer is still fairly unusual, and is good for career changers and recent graduates alike. Our tutors are still in schools, and are able to demonstrate in-class delivery of research-based pedagogy. Trainees can also access personalised support from NIoT tutors and mentors, with access to a trainee wellbeing officer in each region.

We also put the wellbeing of trainees, and the children they teach, at the forefront of our training, with a foundation programme of Mental Health Champion training with the Place2Be.
