My first term as a teacher trainee
The English Department
Before my first day entering school, I was a bundle of nerves. I was completely ready to meet the students and get engrossed in teaching life after my Flying Start Week, but this did not help the fact I am such a nervous person! However, I had absolutely no reason to be scared. All of my worries quickly evaporated upon my arrival.
The English department were the most welcoming people I could have ever imagined. In my first few weeks, they all looked out for me and supported me; despite the numerous questions I had (a big thank you to everyone who helped me with the printer!). I felt like part of team English from the get-go on that first INSET day, and that has not waivered since.
One highlight of each of my days at school is getting the chance to sit and eat lunch together, chatting and laughing about anything and everything! I truly could not be more grateful to the department for welcoming me as a part of Team English. They also give me endless information to help with teaching our subject, giving me everything I ask for and more, whether that be resources, information or book recommendations.
My Experience Highlights
The first lesson I taught solo feels like a million miles away now, but it was only 12 weeks ago! It was Friday, period 5, and I nervously anticipated the lesson all week.
"Teaching a full lesson by yourself is something that seems so scary initially, but after doing it, you can feel your confidence growing with every lesson you teach."
One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve been involved in is teaching and marking my year 8 class for two assessments. Not only does getting to mark their books fill me with so much pride, from their beautiful hard work to their gorgeous handwriting, but it gives me the opportunity to reflect on how far my teaching has come in that time. Nearly half of the class improved by at least one grade - I marked their books with a grin on my face the whole time!
Training Days
Thursday training days are not only a privilege to be able to attend and learn from such knowledgeable people, but they also are such a fun and hands-on way to learn. However, the days would not feel like this if it were not for the amazing tutors and my fellow ITTs (Initial Teacher Trainees). Learning all of the ins and outs of the teaching trade is brought to life through our discussions, and I always leave Thursdays ready to tackle my Friday in school head-on and well-prepared.
"Thursdays have also given me the chance to make many friendships and connections with the other ITTs who are training, it feels like our own little community."
I would not be able to write about the other ITTs without mentioning English ITTs who are training alongside me – from the advice to the laughter they all bring to me, I thank them for all of their help so far this year, they are all amazing!
If you are considering training to teach, there are a million different reasons I could write down to encourage you to take the plunge.
"All I can say is that I am only 12 weeks into my training, and I can already see why everyone says it’s the best and most rewarding job in the world!"
