Overview
Embarking on a teaching career is a significant decision, and choosing the right training programme is crucial.
Training to be a teacher with the NIoT is different. You’ll be in the classroom from day one and experience two different school settings to broaden your experience. You’ll be part of a national cohort of over 1,000 trainees from across the country and learn with them for one day a week at one of our campuses.
Am I eligible to teach?
You’ll need:
- A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
- A GCSE grade C or above in English and maths, or equivalent
- Primary teachers will need a GCSE grade C or above in science, or equivalent
- Your degree or A-levels will need to be relevant to the subject/phase you wish to teach.*
*Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fee-paying
All our ITT courses are available through the fee-paying option, and all lead to QTS and a PGCE qualification. Course fees are payable by trainees. The DfE offer bursaries and scholarships for many courses worth up to £31,000 tax-free. Tuition fee and maintenance loans may also be available depending on your circumstances.
Salaried
Candidates with strong academics and relevant experience may be eligible for a salaried route into teaching. All courses lead to QTS and a PGCE. Salaries are determined by the unqualified teachers' pay scale. Salaried options are available in certain high-priority subjects.
Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship
This is a nationally recognised, employment-based route into teaching for those already working in a school. All trainees will work towards QTS and an end point assessment. A PGCE can be obtained for an additional cost if validated by the University of Birmingham. Trainees will earn a salary whilst working towards their qualifications.
