Project Overview

So far, we have been relying on the MAT data managers to extract pupil assessment data from the school management information system (MIS), anonymise the school, teacher and pupil information before sharing it with the TED team at NIoT. This is massively time consuming and not scalable in the long term!

To address this, we are developing a secure infrastructure to store the TED and make it easier to gather MAT data by automating data extraction from the MIS. The system will contain links between teacher and pupil data to preserve important relationships in the dataset, and our TED Technical Advisory Group will provide independent advice, support, and critical evaluation throughout the project.

As our aim is for the TED to become a central resource for evidence-based teacher development in the future, we are collaborating with the Bennett Institute for Applied Science at Oxford University to produce an education version of their OpenSAFELY (OS) platform, a secure analysis system originally developed to carry out research on NHS Covid-19 records. The OS-Schools initiative, funded by XTX Markets, will ensure that sensitive educational data is handled with the highest level of security while allowing researchers to examine trends in teacher development and impact.

OS-Schools will establish a trusted research environment (TRE), enabling analysts to submit research queries and obtain aggregated, non-identifiable responses. Additionally, it will enhance the future scalability of the TED by encouraging more schools and multi-academy trusts (MATs) to contribute data, thereby increasing the depth and accuracy of insights into teacher effectiveness.
