Understanding and improving the initial teacher education selection pipeline

Timeline:

Project overview

The National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) is committed to addressing the critical shortage of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) trainees in England. As a sector, part of our collective response to this challenge must involve a focus on equity in ITE selection processes: we must strive to enhance diversity in the teaching profession, in particular by attracting and recruiting more aspiring teachers from racially marginalised groups, those with disabilities, and those from economically less-advantaged parts of the country. At the NIoT we are currently conducting research designed to help us understand more about the pipeline in ITE selection—from initial application, to interview, recruitment, and onwards to qualification and employment as a teacher—and what factors are associated with the apparent “leakiness” of this pipeline for certain social groups. In turn, we plan to use this research to enhance our own selection processes, ensuring they are inclusive, sustainable and effective in maintaining high standards.
